This is a very unusual one of a kind piece.

Handthrown on the wheel of stoneware clay.

Then, images of buddhas and images of nature's form as well as lines of clay were added as a sculptural element. (Potters call the technical term for this "sprigging").

Anyway, it is similar to how Wedgewood was made, and it is an interesting technique for a potter to explore, because it allows for endless opportunity in decorating.

Because this piece is so elemental and has a museum feel to it, I gave it a very loose glaze treatment, clear, blues, cloudy, strawberry and black tones go around the form. It does have an artifact or ancient vibe.

Some areas of the vase are thusly accented by the glaze, and other areas become muted, just as I had hoped.

The only issue I have with the piece is that the glaze got very thick in places, and it collected in one area getting so glassy that the glaze pooled and started to run off the pot. The excess glaze I had to grind off. But I do not consider this to be a defect. In fact, I like it because it tells you more about the piece, and the process of how it was created...rather than it being a piece that looks like it came out of a science lab (all regular and sterile). This pieces looks like it got just dug-up...

I consider it to be a very unusual vase of handmade pottery, and definately of collector-quality especially for those interested in buddhas or icons. Approx 8 x 5.5"
